Welcome letter from the Principal

August 24, 2017

Dear Colfax Parents and Students,

The journey has begun! Welcome back to our returning families and welcome to our new families. As we are embarking on a new school year we renew our excitement and commitment to provide each child with a rigorous, joyous and supportive educational experience. We are honored you have chosen us to build the strong educational foundation that will set your child up for lifelong success, academically and personally. They are the future citizens of this world.

Things to share:
Vision/Mission Statement: As a staff, we felt there was a need for a clearer vision/mission statement. That is why we came together to create the following draft:
At Colfax, our mission is to provide all students the opportunity to achieve the knowledge and skills necessary to become contributing citizens in our diverse society.
We believe that providing an environment of high expectations and joy creates a strong foundation of academic and social-emotional success for all students.

Before finalizing it, we want to hear your input. Please come voice your suggestions at:
The Parent Leadership Team meeting on Wednesday, August 30th at 8:30-9:15.
Coffee with the principals on Friday, September 8th from 8:30-9:00 in the family nook in front of the office.
There will be a vision/mission suggestion box in the office where you can provide written feedback about the draft.
You can also email me directly at sandra_berumen@dpsk12.org.

Communicating with the Principals: Please feel free to reach out to me and Jackie Bretl, the assistant principal, with any questions, concerns, and to share positive feedback. Our goal is to be outside most mornings at arrival and dismissal and you can also communicate with us on Coffee with the Principal Fridays. An additional way, is to call Nadine Perez, school secretary, to schedule a meeting, 720-424-8740. You can also call me at 720-424-8742 or email me at sandra_berumen@dpsk12.org.

Family Nook: We are transforming the area in front of the office to the Family Nook. It is currently “under construction”. We want this area to be an inviting space for parents. I hope you are already starting to feel that. I will be asking the Parent Leadership Team (PLT) to help me lead the transformation of this space.

Coffee with the Principals Fridays: Another good time to communicate with us will be on Friday mornings from 8:30-9:00, after Friday Morning Meetings, over a nice cup of coffee. We will be setting up a coffee station in the family nook, located in front of the office on this day.

New Differentiation and ELD Block: Students who are English language learners will continue to receive targeted English language instruction in a daily 45 minute ELD block. Non English language learners will also be receiving targeted and differentiated instruction in literacy and math during this time, called the “Differentiation Block.” Students will be transitioning between teachers for these supports.

Teacher Home Visit Program: Colfax will be participating in the Parent-Teacher Home Visit Project this school year! This program encourages educators to make home visits (always scheduled ahead of time and with your permission) to build upon and strengthen the partnership between teachers and families.

I am excited to continue to learn about and build upon the great things that are already happening at Colfax. We have great school because of the wonderful students, families and staff! Again, please reach out with any questions or concerns. We also like to hear the good messages, so please also reach out to share any positive feedback.

Warmly,

Sandra Berumen
Principal

A little about me; It has been my honor to be an educator in Denver Public Schools for the past nineteen year. I have had various roles, amongst them, classroom teacher, interventionist, literacy coach, parent liaison, and school leader. The most important role I’ve had in my life though, is as a mother of two amazing human beings. My son, Carlos, is 18 and starting college. My daughter, Katia, is 14 and starting high school in Denver Public Schools.
